Assistant Professor OGGIER Frédérique, NRF Fellow "Thanks to both the National Research Fellowship and the Nanyang Assistant Professor scheme, Singapore is offering to young researchers great opportunities, which I have not seen anywhere else in the world. I consider myself very fortunate to have been awarded such a funding opportunity for my research, with which I can now pursue my research at SPMS, a young school, full of dynamism, which provides me with the best possible environment." |

Asia is one of the fastest developing region in the world. The rapid growth of the Internet provides us great opportunities to plant our ideas to bring more innovations in high technology. Singapore is one of the center in the world with well-developed IT and financial industry. NTU provides the best possible environment and facilities for my work. I get all kind of supports from the university, the school and division. I came here with a dream, and I have strong believe that it will come true." |

The start-up package was quite attractive, which could potentially allow me to build up my group relatively quickly. Very recently, the three-year-old chemistry division just moved into its new building. I hope that I can make my own contribution to its growth. Before moving to Singapore, I did my Ph.D degree at MIT in Prof. Greg Fu's lab. Later, I spent three years in Prof. John Hartwig's group, first at Yale and later at UIUC after he decided to move. All of my trainings were related to using transition metal catalysis to solve important problems in organic synthesis, including both method development and mechanistic investigations. The central theme in my research programs is to prepare useful building blocks for organic synthesis from simple, cheap starting material, with the magical touch of catalysis. My research interests center around chemical catalysis, be it heterogeneous or homogeneous; be it transition-metal mediated or small-organic-molecule assisted. We aim to develop important new reactions that have been unachievable previously, or existing ones that need much improvement. I also plan to launch programs in solar cell research and bio-mimmetic chemistry, by extending our synthetic expertise. " |

Nanyang Assistant Professor FAN Hongjin "After spending three and half years in Germany and two years in UK for my postdoc, I found that I prefer to settle down in a place with a healthy combination of Asian culture and western lifestyle. Singapore appears to be the best choice. It is a small country with big attempts and a research platform for local action while global thinking. Funding is the key to doing research. In Singapore, it's relatively easier to obtain good amount of funding compared to US and Europe. SPMS is a young school and we are witnessing that many young staff from top universities are joining in SPMS - I take this as a golden opportunity for young researchers like me to cooperate, and to conduct creative and innovative research." |
