It is a pleasure to welcome you to the homepage of the School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) at the Nanyang Technological University.
At SPMS, you will learn about the business of science and mathematics, as well as the science and mathematics for business. We believe, together with many leaders in our society, that an education in science and mathematics, with emphasis on analytical, quantitative and communication skills, provides a solid foundation for entry into many careers as well as for innovation and enterprise.
Many technology-conversant decision makers have been groomed in science and mathematics. Our Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, majored in mathematics; our former Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Tony Tan, majored in physics; and our Businessperson of the Year 2005, Ms Olivia Lum, majored in chemistry. You are in good company when you read science and mathematics at the university.
We are the only local university to offer direct 3- to 4-year Honours degree programmes in: Chemistry & Biological Chemistry, Physics, Applied Physics, Physical Sciences, and Mathematical Sciences. We know that Honours degree holders learn more and earn more, and you want to enhance your chances by entering into a direct Honours degree programme at SPMS.
We take pride in the quality of our programmes. The major in Chemistry & Biological Chemistry follows the rigorous American Chemical Society guidelines for professional training in the discipline. The majors in Physics and Applied Physics provide a firm foundation in the core theories with strong experimentation that highlights how science advances technology and with applications over interdisciplinary areas ranging from materials to life sciences. The major in Mathematical Sciences covers a good mix of fundamental, as well as applied, computational and industrial aspects of mathematics and statistics.
We have built up excellent laboratory facilities for both teaching and research, and we take pride in our strong and student-friendly programmes where professors emphasize student-focused learning. We believe that you will learn a lot at SPMS and develop into a confident student ready to take on the challenges of the future workplace and the many possible careers ahead, some of which we can’t even define today.
