Phua Si Qi Samantha, Chemistry, Intake 2008

I was a member of the Chemistry Society in VJC where I had the opportunity to help to organise enrichment activities for the East Zone Science Carnival. I also took part in the Budget 2007 Essay Competition, entitled “Financing Our Future”, organised by The Ministry of Finance. The essay encompasses aspirations and thoughts on fiscal policy and public finance. I was awarded the Commendation Prize for my entry. Apart from that, I represented college in the GIC - National Economics and Fund Management Quiz 2007, which I got Certificate of Merit. Being aware of the needs of the community, I was involved in mentoring as a long term community involvement project, where I coached children from lower-income families. Currently, I am in Earthlink Club and Investment Interactive club in NTU.

SPMS has offered me an enriching experience so far. Having passionate and dedicated professors, who are constantly challenging me to think beyond what is taught, has helped me broaden my horizons and sparked my interest in certain fields of chemistry and biological chemistry. “Curiosity”, which is important trait for any scientist, is also encouraged and opinions can be discussed freely with my professors.

SPMS was my choice as it offered me the flexibility of planning my own pace of completing my course. With world-class faculty and laboratory equipment, it certainly enhances research experiences here. Also, the fast-track programme and Accelerated Bachelors Programme, which allows students to graduate earlier, attracted me. I would be able to save some time and further pursue my love for a specific area of chemistry.
