Emeritus Professor Kiang Ai Kim was Head of the Department of Chemistry at Nanyang University from 1975-1980, before Nanyang University merged with the University of Singapore to form the National University of Singapore. This year, Professor Kiang will be 90 years old on 8 November 2005.

We thought we would honour Professor Kiang, who has contributed so much to Chemistry and education in Singapore and could be considered as the “father of chemistry” in modern Singapore, by setting up the Kiang Ai Kim Endowment Fund at NTU. I met with Professor Kiang a few weeks ago, and he agreed to the proposal.

We plan to raise between $500,000 - $1,000,000 by November 2005, if possible. The proceeds from the Fund will be used for undergraduate bursaries and scholarships, travel awards for graduate students, medals and book prizes, for the new School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences.

Professor Kiang said that he went through university supported by various scholarships too and felt that it was a good way to encourage more talent to pursue the path of science and technology so vital to our nation’s leadership and competitiveness.

We will be very grateful for your kind contribution to the Professor Kiang Ai Kim Endowment Fund. The donation made out to “Nanyang Technological University” is eligible for a double tax deduction and a 1:1 matching from the Singapore government.
