Professor François Mathey, a Nanyang Professor with SPMS, has been awarded the People’s Republic of China’s highest award for foreign experts, the Friendship Award, for promoting scientific research and nurturing talent at the Zhengzhou University (ZZU) in Henan province.

Prof Mathey set up the International Phosphorus Laboratory (IPL) in ZZU in 2005. He was also instrumental in IPL’s collaboration with France’s National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and University of Rennes on new phosphorus compounds for future developments in plastic electronics such as flat screens and cellular phones.

The Friendship Award is a state-level award set up by the Chinese government to honour foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to China's economic construction and social development. Prof Mathey received the prestigious award at a ceremony held at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People on 29 Sep 2009.
