For further info, pls refer to the following:

The QE will be an oral examination on three topics. One topic is your research and this will be examined by your supervisor.

For the two other topics, the usual procedure is that you talk to two further faculty members and ask them to agree to be examiners. With these faculty members, you need to agree on the exam syllabus for their respective part. You also need to agree with your supervisor on the syllabus for the research part.

The syllabi of the three examination have to be submitted together with the QE application. The choice of the examiners has to be approved by the Division.

In case you prefer not to contact the examiners by yourself, the Division will appoint them.

Usually, the content of the two non-research-parts of the QE topics would come from graduate courses you have taken, but this is not necessary.

The scope of the topics for your oral examination must cover at least three substantial topics from three distinct mathematical subject areas which can be chosen from

  • Pure Mathematics
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Computational Mathematics
  • Probability and Statistics

The selection of 3 subjects out of the above 4 listed is with effect from 1 Mar 2009
