Coursework Requirements for Higher Degree by Research

Candidates reading for a higher degree by research pursue an independent but supervised research on an approved topic based on which a thesis must be submitted for examination. Candidates are also required to attend classes and pass the examinations in a certain number of graduate Courses. Selection of Courses is made after consultation with the research supervisor.

(i) The coursework requirements for the two degrees are as follows:

  • M.Sc. - 3 coursework
  • Ph.D. - 6 coursework

(ii) For courses that are graded with Pass/Fail, students are only allowed to register and read as follows:

  • M.Sc. - 1 coursework
  • Ph.D. - 2 coursework

(iii) Every research student is allowed to take two additional courses. Please note that additional courses are included in the GPA calculations.

Important Note: (as at 16 November 2005)
All SPMS graduate Course codes are revised from Semester 2 AY2006-2007 onwards. The first digit after the alpha characters is changed from 5 to 7 i.e. CBC/MAS/PAP 5xx to CBC/MAS/PAP 7xx.
