Why Should I Study Chemistry At The Division Of Chemistry And Biological Chemistry (CBC) At SPMS?

Although chemistry is one of the most demanding disciplines, our excellent curriculum coupled with a strong research culture and environment provides you with the flexibility required for developments in a rapidly changing and expanding scientific scenario.

The Division of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry (CBC) offers an undergraduate major in Chemistry that satisfies the American Chemical Society (ACS) curricular guidelines for a rigorous undergraduate professional education in chemistry. The programme is intended to prepare students for professional work in chemistry or for entrance into graduate school in the chemical sciences.

The curriculum in modern chemistry coupled with the rapidly expanding field of Biological Chemistry will emphasize the mode of thinking in chemistry and science, and will be delivered by a strong and extremely committed faculty of high caliber, supported by first class infrastructure and environment for teaching and research in the form of state of the art laboratory facilities and instrumentation, and excellent library resources.

To bring a modern perspective, students are also given options to specialize in upcoming and fast growing areas of chemical sciences such as medicinal chemistry or/and green chemistry or/and Food Science and Technology and also opportunities for local or overseas industrial attachment in their 4th year of study.

Will I Receive Quality Instruction?

At CBC we believe that it would be impossible and really not necessary to cover every possible topic in a vast science such as chemistry. We believe that it is more important that students learn how to learn through problem-solving, laboratory exercises, and project work which also brings out teamwork, and communication skills. Problem-solving skills that cut across the traditional subdivisions of chemistry will be emphasized and developed. Employers value such skills.

The courses are exciting because our excellent faculty is actively involved in current research of this rapidly moving scientific discipline. They strive to provide students with the fundamentals of chemistry and biological chemistry and foster their ability to tackle a variety of challenging issues in the field.

The quality of the instructional facilities continues to improve each year. These include a new building for the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences which will house what is already being considered as one of the top notch Chemistry building in the world with world class teaching and research facilities.

What Distinguishes The Program At CBC From The Other Programs Being Offered In Chemistry?

CBC offers the first and only 4-year direct honours undergraduate program in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry in Singapore. In the first 2 years, undergraduate students will be taught the basic foundation of chemistry. A broad-based education would also be emphasized by providing avenues to learn other scientific disciplines and even beyond science. This is then followed by more specialized courses in the third and fourth years. Students are also given options to specialize either in medicinal chemistry or/and green chemistry or/and Food Science and Technology.

In addition to the rigorous undergraduate laboratory work which exposes students to cutting edge equipment and techniques, students are also given opportunities to carry out research with staff members during the semester break as well as through a semester-long intensive research project in year 4. The latter can be done in industry, research institutes or within the university.

For students interested in an overseas experience, we have the Global Immersion Programme (GIP) or overseas exchange programme.
