Research Facilities

Highly sophisticated instruments are essential to support the research activities carried out in our Division of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry. These facilities not only serve as research analytical tools, but also as valuable teaching aids that our students can have valuable experience in operating them.
Highlights of our facilities include:

  1. Mass Spectrometer Laboratory
  2. NMR Laboratories
  3. X-ray and Elemental Analysis Laboratories
  4. Confocal microscope facility

Mass Spectrometer Laboratory

This laboratory houses one of the most advanced and complete High-Resolution Mass Spectrometer system in Singapore for the accurate measurements of molecular weights of pure compounds.

For liquid mixtures, we also have a Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometry (LCMS) system for the tandem separation of components in a mixture and low resolution mass analysis. For mixtures with volatile components, our Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) system is able to separate the mixtures to measure molecular weights.

NMR Laboratories

Our Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Laboratories houses the latest high-field 500 MHz, 400MHz and  300 MHz magnets. The molecular structure of a compound in solution could be elucidated from these high resolution machines.

X-Ray and Elemental Anaysis

We have a Single-Crystal X-Ray diffraction instrument which provides probably the most conclusive means for the identification of molecular structure of a crystalline compound.

This laboratory also manages an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer and an Elemental Analyser, which together, will provide accurate atomic composition of samples.

Confocal Microscope facility

We have set up a brand new fluorescent imaging equipment: Nikon TE 2000U Confocal Microscope stand with cooled-digital CCD camera system, which enables us in imaging cellular structure, dynamic visualization single molecule and functional analysis enzyme assay, protein-protein interactions both in vitro and in the living cell.

Standard Equipment

Besides these high-end instruments, our staffs also maintain and operate an array of basic instruments for research and teaching, these include polarimeters, UV spectrometers, IR spectrometers, CD spectrometers and numerous liquid and gas chromatography instruments.
