What are the programs available and areas of research at CBC?


The purpose of our graduate program is to train students to work in the fields of chemistry and biological chemistry through a broad, flexible base of coursework and research experience. The Division of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry offers programs leading to the Master of Science Degree (MSc). The PhD program at CBC is much more research intensive and place greater emphasis on original research in areas of contemporary interest and relevance to society.
Strong research programs are available in the areas of Synthetic Methodology, Natural Product Synthesis, Biological Chemistry, Catalysis, Electrochemistry, Computational Chemistry, Theoretical and Physical Chemistry. Detailed Information on Faculty research interests is available here.

What are the admission requirements for the Graduate Program?


A good BSc(Honors) degree or equivalent for the PhD program. Good TOEFL (for international applicants whose native language is not English), GRE and relevant Course test scores preferred. Candidates with relevant experience and publication record are favored.

What courses are available as part of the Graduate Program?


Graduate coursework forms the basis of the intensive preparation for research work. Graduate students will gain a broad and in-depth understanding of key and contemporary topics in chemistry and biological chemistry from which they can launch into more detailed investigations of research literature. Students will also be trained in literature review and seminar presentations.


MSc and PhD candidates admitted in 2005 and thereafter are required to attend classes and pass the examinations of 3 and 6 graduate-level subjects respectively.


Requirements for MSc degree: CBC 729 and CBC 730 + 1 other CBC 7XX Course.
Requirements for PhD degree: CBC 729 and CBC 730 + 4 other CBC 7XX Courses.

What research facilities does the Division have?


Highly sophisticated instruments are essential to support the research activities carried out in our Division of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry. CBC is proud to host one of the best instrumentation facilities in the region for research in Chemical Sciences which include:
Mass Spectrometer Laboratory.

  1. NMR Laboratories ( Bruker 300, 400 and 500MHz systems)
  2. High end single crystal X-ray Diffraction and Elemental Analysis Laboratories
  3. Sophisticated Confocal microscope facility

What type of financial support will I receive as a graduate student?


All Successful candidates admitted for the full-time graduate program at CBC will be awarded NTU research scholarship or teaching assistantships, which include a monthly stipend and full waiver of research fees. Other scholarships and Prizes include the A*STAR Graduate Scholarship , A*STAR International Graduate Scholarship, Singapore Millennium Fellowship, NTU Alumni Scholarship and The Pfizer Graduate prize.


Research Scholarship


The University provides research scholarships in the form of financial assistance to outstanding candidates for them to pursue higher degree studies by research on a full time basic leading to a Master of Science (MSc) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. The scholarship is tenable for one year in the first instance and renewable every 12 months, subject to the scholar’s good progress. The maximum period of the award is two years for a MSc degree candidate and three years for a PhD candidate.


Teaching Assistantship


NTU offers Teaching Assistantship to outstanding candidates pursuing higher degree studies by research. The teaching assistant is expected to divide his/her time between assistantship duties and pursuit of a graduate degree. Teaching assistant is expected to spend approximately 60 contact hours a semester on teaching and/or laboratory duties. The scholarship is tenable for one year in the first instance and renewable every 12 months, subject to the scholar’s good progress. The maximum period of the award is two years for a MSc degree candidate and three years for a PhD candidate.

Please ensure that you have read the general information and have your supporting documents ready before you use the on-line application. Note that applications are to be submitted electronically only. Any other form of submissions will not be accepted. Microsoft IE Version 5.5 and above is required to access the online form and other systems.

Is there an application deadline? When is the best time to apply?


A complete application (this includes the supplementary materials) must be received by the recommended deadlines listed below for the two yearly intakes.

The deadline is not applicable if you are applying for the A*STAR Graduate Scholarship or other pre-arranged programmes. The University reserves the right to admit applicants in other semesters.

When will I hear if I have been accepted for the program?


We will strive to respond as quickly as possible after your file has become complete and a decision has been made by the committee. The most common problem we encounter is not receiving complete applications and supporting documents especially referee reports, transcripts and their authorized translations in English (wherever applicable). Please ensure that you submit all your admission application documents without fail in order to speed up the application review process.

What kind of accommodation is available for graduate students?


Graduate students may choose any of the accommodation administered by NTU. On-campus accommodation includes rooms at Graduate Hall, Nanyang Heights and Nanyang Valley. Alternatively, you may wish to rent a room off-campus or contact our authorized agents offers furnished single or twin-sharing rooms in nearby Housing Development Board 5-rooms/executive flats.
